When is Best Time to Visit Laos?

The most ideal time to go on a vacation to Laos will depend on your objectives and how you travel. Dry season, November to April, experiences little to no rain with moderate temperatures. The wet season starts in May to October it is characterized by tropical rains in the afternoons which helps remove dust from the air and land. Some visitors would rather go to Laos during wet season as there are fewer visitors and significantly reduced prices for hotels and tours.

The capital of Laos is characterized by dry and wet season. The months of November to March is cooler and drier with low temperatures of 17°C (63°F) and highs of 30°C (86°F) until the heat starts in March. There is little to no rain during this time of year which leads to an influx of tourists. April and May are the hottest months with highs of approximately 34°C (93°F) and a peak temperature of 31°C (88°F) in the months of June to October, with low temperatures of 24°C (75°F). Heavy downpours take place in May to September. The rains rarely affect travel.

Luang Prabang
The weather in Luang Prabang closely resembles Vientiane, with evenings of lower and cooler temperatures. The heaviest downpours take place in June to August, with spots of rain outside of the wet season. The months of November to March are the most ideal time to visit. There are quite a number of tourists who visit during wet season because of fewer travelers and a lusher countryside that is bursting with color. The air is also cooler with earthy scents after brief afternoon rains.

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a well-known tourist destination because of the beautiful limestone landscapes and exciting activities such as rafting, rock-climbing, caving, and kayaking. During the wet months of May to September, the Nam Song River flows and fills up four times faster compared to other months. While the rains do not stop excursions, visitors must be extra cautious. This caution must apply to certain activities such as rock-climbing and caving as heavy downpours may cause accidents. But the wet season is the most ideal time to see the countryside and mountains in their full bloom, after heavy downpours.

The months of June to September face heavy downpours which can prevent traveled, if passing through unsealed and unpaved roads, however boat travel is the best during these months. November to March is cooler and drier. The months of March to May experience the hottest temperatures with peaks of 34°C (93°F) and nights having temperatures of not less than 25°C (77°F).
